Burglary charges have become more prevalent in the City of Hoboken in recent years. This is most likely attributable to the increasing population and constant flow of alcohol from the numerous bars and nightclubs which often inhibits people’s decision making. In a recent case, Hoboken police arrested a defendant, believed to be homeless, after receiving information from a vigilant Hoboken senior-citizen resident. The defendant had alleged helped himself to $1,000 worth of merchandise from the entrances of four apartment buildings during one afternoon, according to police reports.
Police were called to Second Street on a report that a suspicious man was opening packages in the street. According to the police report, the caller also told police that he began following the man after he looked out his apartment window and saw the man opening packages, putting the property into shopping a bag and then discarding the boxes before walking away.
When police arrived on the scene to investigated they found the defendant at Garden and Third streets and found two shopping bags stuffed with merchandise when they stopped to question him about the alleged suspicious activity that had been reported.
Cops recovered the empty boxes from the trash and found the man had merchandise intended for four different people living in three different buildings on Garden Street between First and Third streets. When police totaled the entire cache of stolen goods it totaled close to $1000.00 of merchandise. The defendant will ultimately be charged with third degree Burglary and Receiving Stolen Property. First appearances are normally in Hoboken Municipal Court and then the case will be sent up to Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City to CJP where the County Prosecutor’s Office will decide how they want to handle the case.
